Dear Grade 6 community,
Last week we were challenged to dig deep and explore the legacy of Residential Schools in Canada through a compassionate lense. This exploration included a historical look at Canada’s timeline and the contributing parties involved, exploring historical fiction and a critical look at the Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s official apology in 2008. As a class we also explore the elements of an apology based on the principles outlined by Dr. H. Lerner. Toby Mac dropped a new song on Friday that fit so well with our studies (link below). All students demonstrated maturity and empathy this week.
Looking ahead, we will wrap up our Growth Mindset work next week and look a little deeper at what science is and how the scientific method works. In social studies, we continue to work on building understanding of the varying levels of government in Canada and will explore the upcoming BC election. Students are exploring numbers up to the billions and as small as decimals in the thousandths in place value using standard form, expanded notation, word and picture form. We will start to transition from digits with decimals to understand the correlation between decimals and fractions.
Two major projects we are working on include “My Life Island” in Art and a board game for the King’s Equal novel. While students will be given ample time in class to complete these projects, due to the complexity of these projects and individual work speed a student may need to complete some work at home.
Please continue to check planners daily! While grade 6 students are working towards becoming independent, sometimes they need a little help at the beginning of the year!
We will not have a Bible Memory Verse this week.
Peace and grace,
Ms. Froyland
