Dear Grade 6 Community,

As this week ends, I hope to give you a glimpse into some of the discussions and areas of study we are exploring in Grade 6 in 2021!

Novel Study

Students continue to study the novel Front Desk by Kelly Yang. In this novel, we follow Mia Tang and her family through the challenges they face as immigrants in America. Themes explored in this novel include prejudice, human rights, immigration, access to healthcare and safety in the workplace. Mia is a dreamer, as we learn her story, we explore the power of dreams and how to chase them for a brighter future!

Art

Students have completed an art project titled “The World We Want.” Students used zen tangles (repeating patterns) to create a picture of the world the envision in the future. This project was inspired by our study of the United Nations sustainable development goals. Look for themes of peace, inclusion, environmental sustainability and futuristic possibilities.

Considering the First Peoples Principles of Learning, we are now beginning an exploration of Salish Art. It is imperative we understand protocols and avoid cultural appropriation through this study. This week we learned about both protocols and the history of cultural appropriation of indigenous art work in Canada. We are moving forward to exploring Salish art with the curiosity of an artist’s eye seeking meaning and exploring shapes. We will use story to help us through this process.

Science/Social Studies

While we have worked our way through the scientific aspect of Mixtures and Solutions, we can connect our modern understanding of the process of separating mixtures to traditional local knowledge. Students will be exploring the importance of the Eulachon Fish (Saviour Fish) connecting our scientific understanding of separating mixtures to observable practices in traditional practices of indigenous practices in British Columbia.

Math

Our class has a keen interest in solving mysteries! This week we began a study of algebraic expressions. Our learning goals included using variables for changing quantities; and substituting values for variables in algebraic expressions involving one operation.

Bible

We will be spending the next several weeks exploring the Fruits of the Spirit. While students are often capable of identifying the qualities of these attributes, we will be digging deeper to understand how the Fruits of the Spirit look, sound like and feel in action in our lives.

French

Students will have a quiz next week on the months of the year and days of the week. Students will be asked to identify and translate the vocabulary from english to french and french to english. Please note, students have vocabulary recorded in their planners. As we move forward, students will explore “En Hiver” (winter) as our next mini unit.

Music/Student Worship Team

Mrs. Dekoff has encouraged students to connect with parents regarding joining Student Worship Team. This week students will sign up for this voluntary group that will likely practice once a week at 8:00 am before school (day to be announced) and a band will be formed based on student interest. I will let you know when I have more information!
