Dear grade 6 community,
This week we focused on building community. We studied the actions and growth mindset of a B.C. teenager. At just eighteen years old, Terry Fox captured the attention and heart of our nation fostering a legacy of grit and determination. We welcomed Mr. Funk into our class to learn more about his engagement in the Terry Fox Foundation and the Ride of Hope https://terryfox.org/terry-fox-ride-of-hope/. We learned how hard Terry trained for months to prepare mentally, physically, and spiritually (reading scripture and journaling). We also learned Terry had a team standing with him and for him. Along the journey, Terry and his team even had to practice the difficult path of reconciling strained relationships. While the Marathon of Hope was cut short, Terry Fox’s dream of igniting hope and compassion for his cause was fully realized. Our students set personal goals to run for Terry yesterday, embracing the hard physical effort as they reflected on his incredible legacy. Please see the student’s word art inspired through their learning.
This week we also started a practice of reflecting and remembering our nation’s call for Truth and then Reconciliation. I have included several links in case you are interested in learning more about what we are up to. Please send students to school in orange shirts on Oct. 29th as we remember and honor our indigenous community members and neighbors.
Warm regards,
Ms. Froyland
