(Friday) Extreme Environment Robot Project and Writing Assignment

Students have jumped into a significant research project exploring extreme environments on earth and in space. To start this unit of study, students will identify an extreme environment they wish to study in-depth, explore the characteristics of this environment, and then design and build a prototype robot that could be used to research or perform a specific function in the environment of their choice.

Students will complete a formal research paper and design a graphic poster to present their findings accompanied by their robot. Students will have an opportunity to show extending creativity, planning, and implementation of ideas if they can make their robot move, light up or activate in some manner (although not required). Students may choose to work on this project over the weekend if they wish but it is not expected.

I am asking students to bring in found, recycled, or repurposed supplies if possible starting tomorrow. We will spend the afternoon of Friday, May 13th building our projects.

Limited supplies in the classroom include:

  • popsicle sticks
  • hot glue
  • tape
  • paper rolls
  • wooden blocks
  • markers/paint
  • elastic bands
  • construction paper
  • cardboard
  • pipe cleaners

Material ideas for students to bring:

  • foam core board
  • cardboard
  • tin foil
  • (clean) recycling materials
  • bottle caps
  • wires
  • wheels
  • old toys that can be disassembled and utilized
  • old computer parts/old technology that can be disassembled and utilized
  • buttons
  • toothpicks

Track Meet Reminders

As we approach the date of the track meet, I wanted to send out some further information on plans for departure, etc.
We will be taking the bus to Bear Creek Park. Due to the amount of time needed to get there, traffic, and early start time, we will be leaving the school at 7:00 am. Please be here at least 10 minutes early to allow for attendance! (If you are able to drive your child please email or send a note to school. Space on the bus remains extremely limited.)
We will be arriving back at approx. 3:45pm depending on traffic. Keep an eye on the blog. I will post here if we experience delays.
Students should have the following items to take with them:
• Hat
• Water bottle
• Lunch
and snacks (there will be no concession available)
• Phys. Ed uniform (changed into before we go)
• Rain equipment (depending on weather) and warm clothing
• Proper footwear
• Something to do on the bus. Just a reminder that no electronics are allowed on the bus.
For those who are driving, the students should be at the park at 8:30 am
This should be a fun event and we are looking forward to the students having a day full of fun and exercise!
