Bussing

Hello families
Track and field are one of the highlights of the Intermediate year and we are excited to once again travel to Bear Creek Park, Surrey to participate in this event. The track meet is coming up on May 5 and the weather that day is supposed to be fabulous (if the weather reports are to be believed!).

The meet will be a fun-filled day of competition and excitement. Your child will have the chance to run against other kids their age in various events such as the 100-meter dash, long jump, ball throw, high jump, and the 400m. They will also have an opportunity to cheer on their teammates as they compete in these events.

As all Intermediate students are going, our buses/shuttles are going to be extremely full. If there is the possibility that you can drive your own child, I would appreciate it if you could let me know as soon as possible even if you had already signed up for your child to go on the bus. We are also looking for volunteers for the day. Volunteers would be at our table handing out ribbons to students as they finish events. It’s a very easy job. 🙂

Thanks for your help! It should be a fun day!

April 25th-28th

Good afternoon,

I hope you had a wonderful Easter. With the passing of this celebration on the calendar, the school year always seems to go very quickly. On Thursday, April 28th, you will find an interim report sent home with your children. The purpose of this report is to provide a snapshot of how your child continues to progress in grade 6. If you have questions or would like to set up a meeting please feel free to get in touch.

It has been a little while since I have given you a summary of what we are studying these days:

Track Meet

This year we are excited to once again participate in the annual Track Meet hosted by Regent Academy, an independent school in Surrey.  This event is on Thursday, May 5th at Bear Creek Park, located in Surrey. This event is considered a ‘standards meet’, so all students in grades 4-6 get to participate. Each grade participates in five events, and they are ranked first, second, third or participation based on certain standards set for each grade and event. This is a great track meet that allows all our students to compete with several other contestants from schools of the same size and level as our school.

As all students are participating in this track meet, track and field practices will take place during our regularly scheduled Phys Ed times.

For the Track Meet, the bus/shuttle will be leaving at approx. 7:00am and returning at approx. 3:45pm depending on traffic. Space is limited on the bus and shuttle, and we are hoping that some parents may be able to drive their children so as to ease the numbers on the bus/shuttle.

Your child should have brought home a permission form today. Please sign the permission slip below to signify that you are aware of the dates and are allowing your child to participate. If you have any questions, you may refer them to Pamela Goosen or Ian Hancock.

Thank you!

Happy Easter

Students gathered with their buddy class (Rast-Grade 2) today to explore the Easter story and share the good news in fellowship. Together we read “Sparrow’s Easter Story” and then the grade six students supported, encouraged, and participated in six various centers earning their buddy a puzzle piece. Once the little buddies completed the challenge they received a prize (a little easter egg with a small chick inside and the Psalm 96:1-3 written inside to remind the students of Sparrow’s easter song).

We also had the privilege of spending our morning in Chapel worshipping and listening to a message from Pastor Sandra.

A Gentle Reminder

As our Little Digger and Little Hoopster after-school programs continue, we have noticed that many siblings of students involved are also staying at school while waiting for parents to pick them up.

We understand that parents often do not want to make multiple trips to the schoolHowever, parents should be aware that after 3:25 there is no supervision available outside on the playground and in any of the other areas of the school. If an accident happens or an incident occurs, staff members may not be available to help.

For student safety, we would encourage parents to tell siblings to stay inside the gym along the walls and wait there or in the front foyer until parents arrive. Alternatively, carpooling may be available so siblings do not have to wait at the school. Thank you for your consideration.

April 11th-14th

A quick post on a busy weekend! We had a productive first week back and it was so great to be in the classroom working hard together.

With restrictions shifting, I am hoping to book several field trips that I could really use your help with! Please make sure you have a current criminal records check on file with the office in order to participate as a parent volunteer. (Ideas for field trips: hiking, kayaking, and a trip to the MacMillan Space Center in Vancouver.)

BMV (April 13th): John 3:16-17

ORDER TODAY: Hot Dog and Fries for Compelling Love Ministries in Guatemala

*Apologies for the delayed post. I wasn’t aware of this fundraising effort!

Orders must be made today for food on Munch-a-Lunch (April 13th).

https://munchalunch.com/login

Students are invited to bring a donation (minimum $2) to wear casual clothing on April 13th (the whole school). Hot lunch will be handed out to those who ordered (deadline TODAY), and all profits going to the building fund.

As a school, Highroad has linked with Compelling Love Ministries in Guatemala since 2014. We have built classrooms in 4 villages. If a village can provide a classroom then the government will provide a teacher in Guatemala. The classrooms we have built have changed the futures of these villages and their kids. As the leaders of Compelling Love, Rocky and Karren Chupa work closely with a pastor in the village and this also brings an opportunity for spiritual impact.

For so many reasons it seemed clear that we couldn’t launch a mission trip this year. We are praying that opportunity might be possible in 2023. As a school, we feel led to focus on something “outside of our community” and we are planning on building a schoolroom in Guatemala. Looking beyond ourselves will help us to know that God is at work, that we are blessed,We are having 2 pay-to-wear (minimum $2) casual days- Feb. 14th and Apr. 13th for the whole school. On both days there will be a hot lunch fundraiser with all profits going to the building fund. and that we can still be a blessing. This year’s village, Cerrania Los Mayas, has 45 families and 70 students whose present “school” is pictured on the right.

Celebration of Learning!

Today we completed several projects including wrapping up our novel study and food truck project. A highlight from the day was a zoom call from Natalie Palmer at The Palm Coffee Trailer. Natalie was so gracious to share her expertise on what it takes to establish a thriving small business. You can visit her at Highstreet in Abbotsford.

https://www.instagram.com/thepalmcoffeetrailer/

Through the Food truck project, students have…

  • planned a menu, priced out costs, planned for profits, calculated taxes, took orders for 5 days, calculated profits for the week
  • Explored permits and marketing
  • researched the purchase of three options for trucks (new-$$$, older but good shape-$, broke down truck but cheap!) then looked at three loan options over 4,5, 10 years
  • Designed and built a 3D model of their food truck concept complete with appliances inside the truck (calculated area and perimeter to make it all fit)
Questions the asked Natalie today:
  • When did you start your business?
  • Do you have business school experience? How did you prepare to run a business?
  • How many customers do have a day?
  • What was the biggest craziest order you ever had?
  • How do you calculate the price of your food? Especially the profit?
  • What is the most popular thing on your menu?
  • What are some of the costs (not food-related) of running a food truck?
  • What is the biggest profit margin for a single item on your menu?
  • Did you need to get a permit for your business?
  • What advice would you give to a new food truck business?
  • How do you decide where to park your truck?
  • How do you advertise your business? Do you use social media?
  • Do you have a jingle or slogan?
  • Where did you purchase your truck from?
  • What advice would you give your grade 6 self?

After we completed our Front Desk novel study, students completed an art project designing their own motel. There is so much creativity in this group of talented artists and entrepreneurs.

Enjoy your spring break. Please be safe.

Love generously. Learn constantly.

Ms. Froyland
